Walk in the Fall

After I was widowed I discovered that Americans have a horror of people spending Thanksgiving alone. Often Thanksgiving is an extraordinarily beautiful day in Southern California, and what I really had wanted to do was spend the day up at the stable with my horses. However, this turned out to be impossible, without seriously offending well-meaning friends and/or relatives. Years passed, beautiful Thanksgivings came and went, and always I had somewhere I had to go. And then in 2005 I realized I was going to be free to do what I had always wanted to do: spend the day alone and enjoy the lovely day outdoors. Unfortunately by the time this happened I no longer owned horses, but it was yet another gorgeous Southern California day, and I did own a digital camera. So I went for a long walk around town to see what I could see. On the corner of my street there is a house with an amazing front yard, maintained by someone I've always thought of as The Eccentric Gardener, and among his many flowers were irises in full bloom. Almost every other house here in La Verne has a bougainvillea somewhere on the premises, and I got several interesting shots. For those who say we have no seasons, I offer up a photo of a tree, whose leaves have turned a brilliant red. The purple renegade among the bank of yellow flowers was growing behind the local OSH store, and I discovered I had caught a little bug flitting among the blooms.
