Custom Icons for Leopard

By Francine Schwieder

something Here are the designer driven default icons for Leopard. They are rather minimalist, no doubt a rather clean nice looking sort of thing, but in terms of Graphical User Interface usability they are rather less than ideal--especially in list view or column view, or even when the icon view is not blown up to its full 128x128 glory (maybe even when it is). They just are not very visually distinct, you have to actually peer rather closely to see which is which.

Like many others I found such default icons to be a pain. I wanted custom icons that would be noticeable, and so I made some. Here's what my home folder looks like now. As long as I was in an icon making frame of mind, I decided I needed a new drive icon for Leopard, so I made one:

Leo Drive

You can download the drive icon, it is a 128 pixel wide png file. Just open it in Preview, you'll notice the Leopard version of Preview preserves the transparency. So to use the icons you open in Preview, copy, do a GetInfo on the file or folder or drive and click the wee little icon at the top of the GetInfo window to select it, then paste, see the illustrations HERE on Preview, in the section on Discoveries and More New Things. Some people are having a bit of trouble pasting new icons onto their startup drives, if you run into that problem, see the instructions HERE, scroll down to the section on Bugs and Boo-Boos and read the entry for number 7.

So here below is my custom icon collection, in png format. Enjoy.
