William Stinnett was born in Lincolnshire, England, during the English Civil Wars, immigrated to Maryland, which had been a refuge for Catholics, in 1661 after the Restoration of Charles II in 1660; because of the presence of both Catholics and protestants, Maryland had passed a religious toleration law in 1649. It is quite likely Stinnett is a French Huguenot name, and the that the Stinnetts had fled to England when the Protestant Huguenots were persecuted in France, beginning in 1550. The name is spelled as Stinnette in later census records.
