The Great Renovation Project: The Hallway

done

The pretty much finished hall, looking from the livingroom. The walls and ceiling are painted, I also painted the panels of the door for the heater closet with, well, paintings, to sort of match the tile. I finished the decorative paintings with an iridiscent gold glaze, so the end of the hall kind of glows in the dark. Still haven't decided about the tile to go into the doorways to the kitchen, dining room and livingroom. But the hall tile is laid and grouted and sealed, and the baseboards have been reconditioned and reattached.

Looking down at the tile while standing in the bedroom doorway (the bit of green carpet is the bedroom), facing the studio. It looks a bit odd because I stitched together a couple of photos and the perspective didn't really match. The decorative bit in the doorway is courtesy of 3 by 12 inch sheets I bought. I started experimenting with using broken tile to make my own doorway transitions, and as filler (which you can see at the right), and liked my efforts much better than the pre-built ones, so that is what I did from that point on in all the doorways. Looks better and is actually rather fun.

So I've decided to think of it all not as home refurbishing, but as a combination of exercise program and art project. It's less like a chore and more fun that way, and I don't worry so much about just how long it all takes. Ars longa, and all like that.
