Looking toward the front door.

I bought two identical carpets at, of all places, Target, and joined them together to nearly fill the center of the livingroom. Of course, it was impossible to find something that would exactly meet the bill, so I filled the gap with square decorative tiles that I had gotten at Lowe's. The field tiles were attached to the floor with the correct goop (a kind of mortar that you mix up and spread) and the decorative tile was attached with the wrong goop, that I had mistakenly used in the hallway. So when I decide to replace the carpet I can readjust the size of the hole to fit the new carpet--in one direction a replacement can be as much as seven inches bigger, in the other four. And, of course, it can always be smaller, I would just add whatever decorative tile I needed. You can see the detail of the corners, one collaged into the picture at the right, and other directly above it.
