February 2008

There are many who really believe the Shrub That Ate La Verne in my backyard ought to be exterminated. I have resisted this nearly, but not quite, universal opinion. I like it. In the Spring it is sometimes quite covered with lovely yellow flowers. One day late in February 2008, when it briefly stopped raining, I dashed outside and took some photos to prove that it really does have some redeeming value, aside from the fact that it is green and requires no care.
snowdrops The Snowdrops have faithfully been making their appearance for many years now, and this year I succeeded, on about my sixth attempt, in getting a photo of them, with the flowers actually in focus. The backyard has also been the site of a little tiny herb and vegetable garden for the last several years. I'm sure you are all familiar with Rosemary, but may not know that a Rosemary shrub actually blooms: lots of small blue flowers. These are somewhat the worse for wear, due to the rather heavy rain, and the purple bloom of the Mexican Sage is similarly afflicted, plus being especially bedraggled due to age. The Sage really should have been cut to the ground by now. It's just been too rainy for me to get to that particular chore. And finally there are two photos that might be called "Failure To Variegate"--the first is the variegated Azalea I bought last year, which is just starting to bloom. So far NONE of the blooms are variegated. The second is a variegated Camelia, most of whose blooms are variegated, but about one in twenty isn't. This is one of those.
