Spring 2010

April 3 to May 13

The New Dig, with a new citrus tree (a tangerine), plus some tomato plants. Mouse over to toggle from April to May. In May there are also some lettuces, a whole lot of radishes, and the tomatoes have gotten very big, very quickly. And my stone path is over two-thirds done.

Harvested radishes, displayed below the growing radishes and some spinach and lettuce.

Here's a close-up of the lemon tree, showing a few of the ripe lemons. Last year I harvested about a dozen lemons, this year there are about 3 dozen of them.

More harvested radishes, displayed in front of some Sweet 100 green tomatoes; with my chubby thumb.

A shot which, I hope, shows my aesthetic criteria for the front yard: things should be red, white, blue or edible.

harvest

And here we have a clutch of green Early Girl tomatoes. Last year most of the tomatoes in the back yard were eaten by rats (they use the power lines across the back as a highway), so I thought I would see if the tomatoes are safer in the front yard.

harvest

An impressive number of tiny tangerines--it remains to be seen how many will actually ripen rather than fall off the newly planted tree. I was excited by a similar profusion on the Valencia orange last year, but only one fruit actually set. And the neighbor kid ate it a day before I planned to pick it.

hummer

Meanwhile, out in back, I discovered a humming bird had made a nest in the Camellia. Unfortunately there is no way for me to get into the garage without my head passing within inches of her, which alarms her, while the hum as she flies past my ear alarms me.

corner

I've started cleaning out the northwest corner of the back yard. I've already filled the Green Thing twice, and have a pile of cut stuff that will probably fill it twice more--and I've got lots more trimming to do. When I started there was just a wall of green, and you couldn't even see that corner.

sweet

I finally got the Sweet 100s into the ground out back, and some are almost ripe. Unfortunately, what ya see here is all there is. The plant may be suffering from blight.

pine

The other morning I noticed the pine tree seemed to glow with silver outlines around all the needles. I doubted the camera could catch the effect, but I gave it a try anyway. Kinda pretty, although not as neat as it really was.

pano

Finally, here's the complete Panoramic View of the front of the house on May 15th, 2010. Getting to my goal, which is no more need for a lawn mower by the time I'm 70, just a weed sprayer. I'll be able to toddle along spritzing weeds whenever I'm in the mood for some fresh air and sunlight--no hard work required. I've got 3 more years to go to finish this project.
