Redoing the Front Yard: Fall 2006

bulb State of the yard November 18, 2006: As you can see there has been some progress. I had the tree trimmer out this month, so the bottle brush now has a shape. I'm almost ready to put the spring bulbs in the bed in front of the bottle brush and in the new planter next to the little walkway leading to the hose. Progress is slow but more or less steady. Next I will add more of the pebbles all the way along the front of of my stepping stones, and, I think, under the loquat tree. If I finish by the middle of December I will have actually accomplished what I set out to do this year. Of course, my original intent was to get this far by the end of this past Spring, rather than by the end of this year. But, so it goes.

Working on the Bulb-bed, Uh-Huh

flowers Just working' on the bulb-bed: Here's a close up of my brilliant idea for combining the pebbles, stepping stones, and pieces of broken stepping stones. I think it looks kinda neat. Still a work in progress. You can see the next stone to be broken sitting in front of the planter (the first one was already broken, which gave me the idea). There's also a pretty square planter that will contain that handsome red flower with dark green leaves, and, by occupying the space on the sidewalk that is over-hung by the bottle brush, prevent one from bumping one's head on the tree trunk. I've gotten about half the bulbs in, plus allyssum ground cover over them. To the left is a close up of what seems to me to be the most successful, aesthetically speaking, planting combination thus far. Love the pretty purple flowers and the dark green bunch grass contrasted with the light colored foliage and flowers in the planter.
