In October 2002 I traveled to Southern Italy and Sicily for the first time, never having been south of Rome before. Here's a photographic record of that trip, with a few comments here and there about what I saw and did. I concentrated largely on Roman art and architecture in my photographs. On the actual trip I tended to concentrate a lot on Italian food and enjoying the company of my friends, as well as the sights.
While no Roman paintings actually survive, some frescoes have, which are much the same sort of thing. Here's a sampling of frescoes from Herculaneum, Pompeii and the villa at Oplontis.
A selection of Roman sculpture, bas reliefs and a mosaic.
Some bits and pieces of Roman structures, sometimes the remains of a building, sometimes parts of buildings.
Greek Temples, including Paestum in Southern Italy and Agrigento in Sicily. There were very large numbers of Greeks in both Southern Italy and Sicily, and Greeks build temples.
The Places I've Seen: from the Amalfi Coast to the Isle of Capri to the slopes of Mt. Etna.
