Want to play a game of Name That Dome? Above is a panorama of Rome, from photos I took on the terrace at the Capitoline museum. To the left are end domes, the Synagogue, which is around the corner from where we stayed, and the other end of the pano is San Giovanni dei Fiorentini. Below are two from the middle: San Carlo ai Catinari and San Andrea della Valle. Between them, way in the distance, is Saint Peter's. You should also be able to pick out the Pantheon, Santa Maria in Campitelli is near the twin sets of bells in an open tower, and St. Agnesse is being restored. |

Orvieto |
Perugia, pietra dura altar |
Florence, Cosimo di Medici |
Vase as fountain, Rome Antiquities Museum |
Theatre Marcellus |
First is a representative view you see when you look over a mountain town. This one happens to be Orvieto, and includes a pigeon in flight, also typical. There was a poor decrepit church in Perugia, which was being restored, and inside there wasn't much left of its former glory, but it did have several side chapels with pietra dura altars. Ken and I suddenly noticed that Cosimo di Medici, whose likenesses can be found all over Florence, bore a striking resemblance to our old friend Peter Hodson. I can't imagine Peter on a horse though. I simply liked the little girl playing in the fountain, and loved the Theatre Marcellus. |
