constantine Rome is a city with spectacular buildings and impressive ruins. Combining both is a kind of Roman speciality. Thus we have Trajan's column, originally done in 113, crowned now with a statue of St. Peter from 1588, and standing in front of the church of Santa Maria di Loreto, from 1501. Of course, you've got to have a picture of the Forum. Mine features the Arch of Severus in front of Santi Luca e Martina. I shot it while on the way to the Capitoline, going up the hill the back way. The focus of the piazza at the top of the Capitoline hill is the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. The original now has its own little inside room, but there is a excellent reproduction in place. I shot it in the morning and the afternoon. Last time I was there Constantine's body parts and their location were all being restored. You can compare then and now HERE. You'll notice Constantine is clean, the wall is all patched and painted, and I'm a whole lot rounder. Ken and I both had the major goal of seeing the Dying Gaul in the Capitoline Museum. We succeeded, and were there early enough to have him to ourselves. One of my favorite things is Roman busts. There are lots of them, and here's a little sample.
